Air Balancing: Engineering Consistent Comfort Into Every Room of Your Home
If some rooms are noticeably warmer or cooler than others, your HVAC system is delivering air unevenly. Air balancing is an engineering-based diagnostic process that corrects airflow distribution through measurement, analysis, and precise adjustment.
Understanding the Service
What Is Air Balancing Service
Air balancing is the process of measuring and adjusting the airflow delivered to each zone or room so that conditioned air is proportional to that space's heating and cooling load. Most duct systems are installed to a general design, but real-world performance diverges due to construction tolerances, duct leakage, and changes in the building envelope over time.
The result is rooms that are perpetually uncomfortable despite the thermostat running — a problem common in multi-story homes, additions, and buildings with long or complex duct runs. Properly balanced airflow reduces system runtime, improves humidity control, and dramatically increases room-by-room comfort without equipment replacement.
Key Benefits
- ?Eliminates hot and cold spots for true room-by-room comfort
- ?Reduces system runtime and associated energy costs
- ?Extends equipment life by reducing blower motor strain
- ?Pinpoints unreported duct leakage or restriction issues
- ?Improves whole-home humidity control
Our Process
How PureFlow Performs Air Balancing Service
Static Pressure Measurement: We begin by measuring total external static pressure (TESP) — the resistance the blower must overcome. High static pressure indicates restrictions such as undersized ducts, blocked filters, or collapsed flex duct.
CFM Testing at Each Register: Using a digital flow capture hood, we measure actual cubic feet per minute delivered at every supply register and returned through each return, then compare against required airflow based on room size and load calculations.
Damper & Register Adjustment: We adjust ductwork dampers and register vanes to redirect excess airflow from over-served rooms to under-served ones, restoring the designed distribution pattern.
Verification Pass: After adjustments, all registers are re-measured to confirm the new distribution is within acceptable tolerances — typically ±10–15% of design targets.
Know the Signs
Warning Signs You Need This Service
- Rooms more than 3–5°F from the thermostat setpoint
- The HVAC system running continuously to maintain temperature in problem areas
- Recent home addition, renovation, or ductwork modification
- Persistent condensation on windows in winter, suggesting poor air circulation
- Hot upper floors in summer despite system running at full capacity
Appointment Day
What to Expect From Your PureFlow Visit
An air balancing visit for a standard home typically takes 2–4 hours. No attic or crawlspace access is required in most cases. You receive a written before-and-after comparison of airflow readings at every register, along with a summary of all adjustments made and any recommended system improvements.
